Mark down 2020 as the year of major change in food branding representation. During this time of national protest for racial justice, numerous food companies are changing their much-debated food brand mascots, which are deeply rooted in American racial history.
PepsiCo has announced that they will remove the image of Aunt Jemima from its packaging and change the brand name in an effort to help bring systematic change towards racial equity.
In the past few months, Land O’Lakes, Uncle Ben’s, Mrs. Butterworth’s, Cream of Wheat, Eskimo Pie and Nestlé have also taken steps to remove perceived racial stereotypes from their logos.
